Ukraine's mine action sector attracts new international operators

Veterans, graduates of the mine action course, have received employment at HALO Trust. The international organisation employed several graduates of the training programme who underwent professional retraining from military service to civilian mine action.
"This is an excellent example of how the system works — training, certification, and real employment. HALO Trust is one of the world's leading mine action organisations, and the fact that our veterans have joined their team speaks to the quality of our training programmes," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
HALO Trust is one of the largest international humanitarian organisations specialising in mine clearance. The organisation has been operating in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, clearing territories and training local specialists.
"These veterans bring invaluable military experience and deep knowledge of the terrain. After completing the course, they received the necessary certification and are now ready to professionally carry out humanitarian demining. We are pleased to welcome them to our team," noted the HALO Trust representative.
The training programme for veterans was developed by the Ministry of Economy together with UNDP and certified operators. It includes theoretical and practical training adapted to the specifics of humanitarian demining.
"After serving in the army, I wanted to continue protecting people but in a different way. Humanitarian demining is exactly that — saving lives by making the land safe. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn a new profession and immediately find a job," shared one of the graduates.
