Japan supports Ukraine's demining efforts with new equipment and funding

124 veterans registered to participate in a mine action course that the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will conduct in December of this year. In total, 10 participants will be selected for the programme, which will last 16 days and cover four key areas of mine action.

The course is designed for veterans and female veterans with disabilities who wish to build a career in mine action. This is the second intake — the first group of graduates successfully completed the programme in August 2024.

«The competition for spots was quite high — about 10 candidates per place. This demonstrates the enormous interest from veterans in this field,» said Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Bezkaravainyi.

The training programme includes both theoretical and practical components: an introduction to the mine action sector, image analysis, data management, and work with analytical tools. Upon completion, graduates will have the opportunity to be employed by international mine action operators working in Ukraine.

The course is implemented with the support of the Government of Sweden.

UNDP in Ukraine helps create opportunities for veterans and persons with disabilities to enter the mine action workforce, contributing both to their social integration and to the capacity building of the sector.
