Sensors for mine detection: innovative technologies have been tested in humanitarian demining in Kharkiv region. The testing was conducted at a specialised testing ground and involved teams from several countries with different types of sensor technologies.
"Kharkiv region has become a testing ground for the latest mine detection technologies. Teams from around the world brought their sensor systems — from multispectral cameras and thermal imagers to ground-penetrating radars — and tested them in real conditions," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The testing took place over several days and included exercises with various types of explosive ordnance placed at different depths and in different soil conditions. Each technology was evaluated on detection accuracy, speed, and reliability.
"The results are encouraging — some technologies demonstrated a very high detection rate. We are particularly interested in technologies that can work in conjunction with drones, enabling large areas to be covered quickly," noted the Deputy Minister.
The testing was organised with the support of international partners and is part of Ukraine's broader innovation strategy in the mine action sector. The results will be used to develop recommendations for integrating the most promising technologies into standard demining workflows.
"Innovation is not a fashion statement — it is a necessity. Given the enormous scale of mine contamination in Ukraine, we need technologies that can multiply the effectiveness of our sappers," emphasised Bezkaravainyi.
