Swiss mine action foundation deminers named the most contaminated community in Kharkiv region

Anti-tank mines, fragmentation mines, and cluster munitions: the Izium community is one of the most contaminated in Kharkiv region.

As a non-governmental mine action operator, FSD (Swiss Foundation for Mine Action) has various types of activities. These include non-technical survey, technical survey, clearance, and explosive ordnance risk education.

«The Izium community is one of the most contaminated we have encountered. The density and variety of explosive ordnance here is enormous — from Soviet-era mines to modern cluster munitions,» said an FSD representative.

FSD teams work in extremely difficult conditions. Mined territories often have damaged infrastructure, which complicates access to contaminated areas.

The Izium district was under occupation for about six months. During hostilities, the territory was subjected to intense shelling and mining. After de-occupation, clearing this area became one of the priorities of the humanitarian demining programme.

FSD has been operating in Ukraine since 2015 and is one of the most experienced international mine action operators in the country.
