Mine action: September results and future plans

Almost 60 countries and organisations have confirmed their participation in the mine action conference in Switzerland. This was announced by Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister — Minister of Economy of Ukraine.

"The unprecedented number of participants confirms the global significance of the humanitarian demining issue in Ukraine. Almost 60 countries and international organisations will gather in Lausanne to discuss how to accelerate the clearance of Ukrainian land from mines and explosive ordnance," said Yuliia Svyrydenko.

The Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC) 2024 in Lausanne is the second annual conference dedicated to humanitarian demining in Ukraine. The first UMAC was held in Zagreb, Croatia.

"We expect this conference to become a platform for new commitments from partners, exchange of experience, and the launch of innovative initiatives in the field of mine action. Ukraine has achieved significant progress, and we want to share this progress and discuss the next steps together with partners," noted the First Deputy Prime Minister.

Among the confirmed participants are ministers and deputy ministers from dozens of countries, heads of international organisations including UNDP, GICHD, HALO Trust, as well as representatives of the private sector and civil society.

"Switzerland, the host country, has been one of the most active partners in supporting humanitarian demining in Ukraine. Hosting the conference in Lausanne symbolises the strong partnership between our countries in this area," emphasised Svyrydenko.

The conference programme includes plenary sessions, panel discussions, and bilateral meetings. Key topics include: scaling capacity, innovative technologies, financing mechanisms, and integration of mine action with recovery.
