Chernihiv region: divers cleared the river bottom of explosive ordnance

An opportunity to rent and lease demining machines has appeared in Ukraine. This new financial mechanism makes heavy and expensive demining equipment more accessible to mine action operators, especially smaller companies.

"Not every operator can afford to buy a demining machine outright — these are expensive assets. The rental and leasing mechanism allows operators to access the equipment they need without a large upfront investment. This levels the playing field and increases competition," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The leasing programme was developed in cooperation with Ukrainian banks and equipment manufacturers. It offers favourable conditions for mine action operators, including extended payment terms and reduced down payments.

"When we first explored leasing for demining machines, many thought it was impossible. But we showed that standard financial mechanisms can be adapted for this sector. The result — operators get machines, banks get reliable clients, and the country gets more demining capacity," explained the financial partner representative.

The rental option is particularly relevant for operators performing short-term projects or working in specific conditions that require specialised equipment. Instead of buying a machine for a single project, operators can rent it for the required period.

"This is an important step in developing a mature demining equipment market. When there are multiple ways to access equipment — purchase, lease, rent — the entire sector becomes more flexible and efficient," noted the Deputy Minister.

The mechanism is available to all certified mine action operators working in Ukraine.
