Humanitarian demining results for April

16 underwater drones will help SSES sappers detect danger in water: they were purchased with funds from the Republic of Korea, France, and New Zealand. The drones are designed for detecting explosive ordnance in rivers, lakes, and other water bodies.

"Underwater contamination is a unique challenge — mines and shells in water pose threats to shipping, fishing, and communities living near water bodies. These 16 underwater drones give our sappers a new capability for detecting danger in aquatic environments," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The underwater drones are equipped with sonar sensors and cameras that allow them to scan the bottom of water bodies and identify suspicious objects. Operators control the drones from the shore, minimising risk.

"The funding from Korea, France, and New Zealand for purchasing these innovative tools demonstrates the broad international support Ukraine receives and the global recognition of Ukraine's mine contamination challenge," noted the Ministry representative.

The State Emergency Service personnel will undergo training on operating the underwater drones before their deployment in field conditions.

"Underwater clearance is an important dimension of the mine action challenge that has received less attention. These drones will help us address this gap and make Ukrainian water bodies safer," emphasised the Deputy Minister.
