Demining innovations: Ukraine tests underwater drones and remote-controlled systems
June 6, 2025
A new testing ground for testing innovations in mine action has appeared in Ukraine. The testing ground is designed for testing new demining technologies, machines, and equipment in conditions as close to real field conditions as possible.
"The testing ground is a critically important element of the innovation infrastructure. Without it, we cannot objectively evaluate new technologies before putting them into field use. Our testing ground meets international standards and allows us to test all types of demining equipment," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The testing ground is equipped with various types of test scenarios that simulate different contamination conditions — different soil types, vegetation, depths, and types of explosive ordnance. This allows for comprehensive evaluation of the capabilities of each technology.
"We have already received applications for testing from dozens of developers from Ukraine and abroad. The demand for testing services confirms that Ukraine has become a global centre for innovation in the mine action sector," noted the testing ground manager.
The creation of the testing ground was carried out with the support of international partners who provided funding and expert assistance. International standards and best practices from other testing grounds worldwide were taken into account.
"A certified testing ground allows us to make evidence-based decisions about which technologies are ready for field use and which need further development. This is especially important given the enormous scale of mine contamination and the high cost of errors," emphasised the Deputy Minister.
