The Ministry of Economy is developing an approach to restoring land in de-occupied territories

The Ministry of Economy is developing an approach to land restoration in de-occupied territories. The approach provides for the integration of demining with subsequent land restoration activities — from soil remediation to infrastructure rebuilding.

"Demining is only the first step. After clearance, the land often needs restoration — soil remediation, removal of destroyed structures, restoration of irrigation systems. We are developing a comprehensive approach that covers the entire cycle — from survey to full restoration of the land for productive use," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The approach is being developed with the participation of experts in agriculture, ecology, construction, and infrastructure. It takes into account the specifics of different types of territories — agricultural lands, residential areas, industrial zones, and natural areas.

"The nexus approach — integration of demining with recovery — is key to efficient use of resources. Instead of dealing with demining and recovery as separate processes, we combine them into a single pipeline, which reduces costs and accelerates results," explained the Deputy Minister.

The Ministry is working with international partners on piloting the approach in several regions. The results of the pilots will serve as the basis for scaling the approach to all de-occupied territories.

"We see demining not as an isolated task but as part of a broader recovery process. This approach allows us to plan more effectively and ensure that every cleared territory becomes productive as quickly as possible," noted Bezkaravainyi.
