Mine detection dogs are actively deployed for demining in Mykolaiv region

Mine detection dogs are being actively deployed for territory demining in Mykolaiv region. Dog teams have become an important component of demining operations, complementing mechanical and manual clearance methods.
"Mine detection dogs are one of the most effective methods for identifying explosive ordnance. In Mykolaiv region, we are actively expanding the use of dog teams, which significantly increases the pace and quality of clearance," said the mine action operator representative.
The dogs undergo specialised training that teaches them to detect various types of explosive ordnance. Each dog handler and dog pair passes certification before being deployed to field operations.
"A trained mine detection dog can search an area faster than a sapper with a mine detector and detect a wider range of explosive items. Dogs are particularly effective in areas with dense vegetation or complex terrain," explained the dog handler.
Mykolaiv region is one of the most mine-contaminated regions of Ukraine, requiring the full range of demining methods. The combination of mechanical clearance, manual search, and mine detection dogs ensures the most thorough territory clearance.
"We use an integrated approach — machines prepare the area, then dog teams and sappers conduct a thorough search. This combination provides the highest level of confidence that the territory is safe," noted the operations coordinator.
