Innovative approaches to demining: drones and AI in mine action

Sheriff Demining is beginning to train veterans in mine action. The company is launching a training programme that will give military veterans the opportunity to retrain as civilian mine action specialists.

"Veterans are our most valuable human resource for the mine action sector. They have military experience, discipline, and an understanding of explosive ordnance threats. Sheriff Demining's programme will transform these skills into civilian qualifications," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The training programme includes theoretical instruction in the regulatory framework, types of explosive ordnance, and safety protocols, as well as extensive practical training in field conditions with modern equipment.

"We believe that veterans are the backbone of the demining sector's future. Our programme is designed to provide them not just with knowledge but with real skills that translate directly into employment," noted the Sheriff Demining representative.

Upon completion of the course, graduates receive certification enabling them to work with accredited mine action operators. Sheriff Demining also offers employment opportunities within its own operations.

"This is a model we want to replicate — private operators investing in the training of veterans and employing them. It creates a sustainable pipeline of qualified specialists for the sector," emphasised the Deputy Minister.
