KPI students created VR concepts for training deminers

Students of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) have created VR concepts for training deminers. The virtual reality simulations are designed to prepare mine action specialists in a safe environment before they face real field conditions.
"VR technologies offer unique opportunities for training — they allow creating realistic scenarios without any physical risk. Students of KPI have developed concepts that can be used to train deminers in recognising and responding to different types of explosive ordnance," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The developed concepts simulate various field conditions — different types of terrain, vegetation, and contamination scenarios. Trainees can practise identifying explosive ordnance, following safety protocols, and making decisions in real-time simulated conditions.
"We wanted to show that Ukrainian technological talent can contribute to demining. Our students combined their engineering skills with an understanding of the sector's needs to create practical training tools," noted the KPI representative.
The VR concepts were developed in collaboration with experienced mine action operators who provided expertise on realistic scenarios and training requirements.
"Innovation in training is just as important as innovation in equipment. VR allows us to train more specialists more quickly and safely. These concepts are a starting point, and we see great potential for their development," emphasised the Deputy Minister.
