The law 'On Mine Action' came into force: what will change
December 5, 2024
How to employ a person with a disability in the mine action sector: the Ministry of Economy together with UNDP prepared recommendations. The document is a practical guide for mine action operators on how to create inclusive workplaces and effectively integrate people with disabilities into their teams.
"People with disabilities have immense potential for the mine action sector — they can work as data analysts, cartographers, training specialists, administrative staff, and in many other roles. Our recommendations show operators how to organise workplaces and adapt processes to make them accessible for people with different types of disabilities," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The recommendations cover several key aspects: workplace adaptation, creation of accessible infrastructure, adaptation of training programmes, development of mentoring systems, and ensuring equal access to career advancement opportunities.
"We analysed international experience and best practices in employing people with disabilities in mine-affected countries. The recommendations are practical and contain specific steps that operators can implement immediately," noted the UNDP representative.
The document also includes success stories — testimonies of people with disabilities who are already successfully working in the mine action sector in Ukraine and other countries. These examples demonstrate that with the right approach, disability is not a barrier to productive work.
"Inclusion is not charity — it is an investment in human capital. People with disabilities bring unique perspectives and skills that enrich teams and improve work quality," emphasised the Deputy Minister.
The recommendations were developed within the framework of the broader social inclusion policy that the Ministry of Economy implements in the mine action sector.
