Near Irpin, a water body was surveyed using sensor technologies for the first time
July 7, 2025
For the first time, sensor technologies were used to survey the bottom of a water body for the presence of explosive ordnance. Mine action operator «Risk Control» LLC deployed the MineHound dual-sensor detection system for the survey of a lake, combined with underwater drones and acoustic equipment.
«Traditional methods of underwater survey involve divers manually inspecting the bottom metre by metre. This is not only dangerous but also extremely time-consuming. Sensor technologies allow us to cover significantly larger areas while ensuring a high level of detection reliability,» explained a company representative.
The survey was conducted near the city of Irpin in Kyiv region — one of the territories most affected by hostilities in 2022. During the de-occupation, significant quantities of explosive ordnance ended up in water bodies, including rivers, lakes, and ponds.
The results of the survey will be used to plan subsequent clearance operations. The collected data will also help develop methodologies for applying sensor technologies in underwater demining at the national level.
This pilot project was implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine.
