Demining in June: cleared land and accelerated implementation of cutting-edge technologies

Demining in June: cleared lands and accelerated implementation of cutting-edge technologies. The monthly results of humanitarian demining were summarised by the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

During June, mine action operators cleared significant areas of agricultural and other land from explosive ordnance. The work was carried out in priority regions — Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

"June was marked by the accelerated implementation of new technologies in demining. We are actively introducing drones, artificial intelligence, and mechanised clearance systems to increase the pace of work and reduce risks for sappers," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.

Among the key achievements of the month were the successful testing of new domestic demining machines, the expansion of the use of drones for aerial survey, and the launch of pilot projects on the use of artificial intelligence for mine detection.

"Technologies are changing the game in humanitarian demining. Where previously it took weeks to survey a territory, now it can be done in days thanks to drones and AI. This does not replace sappers but makes their work much safer and more efficient," noted the Deputy Minister.

Progress in the agricultural land demining compensation programme was also noted — new auctions were held, contracts were signed, and plots were cleared and returned to farmers.

June also saw a number of important international events, including meetings with partners and donors where the progress and priorities of Ukraine's mine action efforts were discussed.
