New international standard for mechanical demining adopted in Ukraine
June 6, 2025
Demining in May: hundreds of cleared hectares, one hundred operators, and the first domestic heavy remotely operated demining system. The monthly summary was presented by the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
"May was a milestone month — the number of certified mine action operators reached one hundred. This is an unprecedented figure for any mine-affected country and demonstrates the dynamic development of the sector. Additionally, Ukraine's first domestically produced heavy remotely operated demining system was presented," said Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The hundredth certified operator represents a five-year growth from 6 to 100 companies — a growth rate that is unique globally. This was achieved through simplified certification procedures, state support, and strong demand for demining services.
"One hundred operators means more competition, more capacity, and more cleared land. Each new operator increases our ability to address the enormous mine contamination challenge," noted the Deputy Minister.
The first domestic heavy remotely operated demining system is a significant technological achievement. The system allows clearing territory without putting the operator at risk, as all control is exercised from a safe distance.
During May, operators also cleared hundreds of hectares of agricultural and other land, continuing the positive trend of increasing the pace of clearance.
"The combination of growing capacity and technological innovation gives us confidence that we can achieve our strategic goal," emphasised Bezkaravainyi.
